How to Restore iTunes After the Computer Crashes

Few things are more frustrating than a computer crash. If your computer crashes, not only can you lose data, photos, music, videos and programs, but you will also be out the time it takes to replace all of those items once your computer is up and running again -- or you get a new one. If, however, you backed up your iTunes library before the crash, you'll be able to restore your iTunes to how it was before the crash -- saving you not only the time it would take to re-download or re-upload that content, but also the money it would take to re-download your iTunes purchases.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer with iTunes software and CD/DVD player/burner
  • iTunes backup CDs or DVDs

Instructions

    • 1

      Open iTunes on your computer.

    • 2

Insert your backup disc into the computer.

    • 3

Click the "Restore" button when iTunes asks you what you want to do. If your iTunes backup is on several discs, you will need to repeat this process until the whole library is restored.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your backup disc(s) can only be used to restore your iTunes library -- you will not be able to listen to them on a CD or DVD player.

  • If you choose to only back up your iTunes purchases to the discs, you will have to re-add songs from your CD collection and other sources manually, as they will not be on your backup disc(s)
