The "wings" hairstyle is popular among those vested in skater culture and originated in the 1970s. Farrah Fawcett had winged hair in her role in the television show "Charlie's Angels," and men and women alike took their style cues from the look. For the best look, you should first layer your hair, then style it into the classic "wings" look.

If you can’t go to your hairdresser to have a stylist cut a wings hairstyle on you, you can still do it on yourself. Anyone can do this style no matter their hair type, so those with curly hair, wavy hair and straight hair, use these tips below.

Layer your Hair

Wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner. Dry your hair partially with a towel so it will be easier to cut. Brush or comb out all the tangles from your hair. Bend down so your hair flips upside down; comb all of your hair so it is facing the floor.

Cut your hair straight across; this will create layers in your hair. The shortest layer will be the one closest to your forehead, and the other layers will be two to three times as long. Cut your hair so that the top layer falls just above your ears. Look into a mirror to check the front and hold a second mirror up behind your head to check the back.

Style Hair into Wings

Wash your hair thoroughly with hair products that will set your hair up to do the best hairstyles and be healthy. Next, apply a volumizing product to your hair while it is still damp, like a pomade or sea salt spray. Blow dry your hair using a large, round brush to flip the ends of your hair up around your ears.

Apply a fine mist of hairspray to your wings style to hold it in place. These tips will lead you to a great wing hairstyle for long hair, medium hair and short hair.
