How to Play "Around the World"

The game "Around the World" is a great educational tool for learning History, World Cultures, and Geography. This fun and interactive game allows students the freedom to move around while testing their knowledge on any given subject. "Around the World" makes for a great end of chapter review and allows the educator to see where the students are struggling to learn the material. All the teacher needs is a set of questions.

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Choose questions relating to the lesson you are currently teaching. Make sure you have enough questions to ask each student one. Keep some extra questions on hand in case of a tie breaker.

    • 2

Choose some type of reward for the winner. The reward can be something tangible like an "Around the World Champion" ribbon, or intangible like extra credit points on the next chapter test or exam.

    • 3

Set aside 45 minutes to an hour to play the game. It may take longer depending on the age of the students, the number of students and the difficulty of the test questions.

    • 4

Give the students instructions on how to play the game. List the rules on the board so that everyone is clear on how to play.

    • 5

      Start the game.

    Instructions

    • 6

Have each child seated at his or her desk so that the first player may be picked. An easy way to do this is by selecting the person in the first desk on either the right or left side of the room and then working toward the back and then around.

    • 7

Have the first player stand at the second player's desk, and then ask them both the same question. The person who gets it right goes on to the next desk, and the person who gets it wrong has to sit down where they are.

    • 8

Crown the champion. The first person to make it all the way around wins the game and is crowned, "Around the World Champion."

Tips & Warnings

  • Basic rules of the game:

  • No yelling out answers

  • If both people answer the question at the same time and the answer is right, the teacher will ask a tie-breaking question.

  • No one is allowed to get up from his seat except the person traveling "around the world."
