Instructions

    • 1

Explain how you heard about the job or what interests you about that particular retail store. The first paragraph should explain who you are and why you are applying for a job with that business.

    • 2

Describe your core competencies as they would benefit the retail store where you want to work. Traits such as good customer services skills, excellent sales skills, and a personable personality are necessary in retail sales.

    • 3

Talk about you past employment experiences. If you have not held a job previously in retail sales but in another industry, make sure to include the skills that you performed that are used in a retail environment. For example, leadership skills or organization skills are transferable skills.

    • 4

Include your educational background in the cover letter if it relates to the job. If you have a degree in merchandising or marketing, this would add to your qualifications and may help you get an interview. If you have a degree in an unrelated field such as nursing include it on your resume but leave it out of your cover letter.

    • 5

Ask for an interview and provide your contact information in the last paragraph. Ensure the reader that you are interested in interviewing for the position. Make sure that your contact information is accurate so that you can be reached if the employer feels you are a suitable job candidate.
