How to Decorate Dance Floors With Balloons
Using balloons to decorate dance floors can be a little tricky to do correctly. Dance floors need to remain open and uncluttered, so balloon decorations need to be thin and tall to take up as little floor room as possible. Balloon columns are a popular way to decorate the edges of dance floors or create a base for balloon canopies that arch across the dance area. You need an assortment of round balloons, plus a freestanding plastic pole to use as a base for the balloon column.
Things You'll Need
- 6-foot-tall plastic pole with stand
- Giant latex patterned balloon
- Tape
- Assorted large latex balloons
- Spool of curling ribbon
- Sissors

1
Place the plastic pole on a flat surface to start the first balloon column. Blow up the the giant balloon and tape it to the mouth to the top of the pole so the latex balloon sticks straight up.
-
2
Blow up two balloons two-thirds of the way full and tie them together at the mouths. Consider using a pair of balloons that matches your theme. Bring this ballon pair to the base of the pole and hold it by the tie, then bring both balloons simultaneously around to the other side of the pole and twist them, one over the other, several times.

Blow up two balloons of another color two-thirds of the way full and tie the mouths together. Bring this ballon pair to the base of the pole and above the first pair, then bring both balloons simultaneously around to the other side of the pole and twist them, one over the other, several times. Make sure to turn the second set of balloons so they're perpendicular to the first set (or form a "plus sign" shape from above).
-
4
Repeat Steps 2 and 3, alternating balloon colors and facing the balloons in opposite directions with each layer. Keep adding balloons until you reach the top of the pole. Place the balloon column on the edge of a dance floor.
-
5
Repeat the entire process to create multiple balloon columns to be placed every few feet on the edge of the dance floor.
-
6
Fill the remaining balloons with helium. Tie each one with a long, curling ribbon. Let the balloons float to the ceiling above the dance floor to create a ceiling decoration to match the balloon columns.

Tips & Warnings
Balloon columns can be used to decorate dance floors in many different ways. For a romantic theme, use giant, heart-patterned, red-and-white balloon for the column top; add pink, red and white latex balloons around the column. You can also use a giant silver balloon with black and silver balloons on the column to create a balloon column with a formal feel.
Do not blow the balloon up to full size, or they will pop when you try to wrap them around the pole.
