How to Display on Both a Laptop & a LCD Projector

A LCD projector displays video and computer data onto a flat surface and is the modern-day version of the old slide or overhead units. This projector, set up to be in sync with specialized computer software, creates a dynamic presentation. The link between the LCD projector and laptop computer requires connecting a few cables and hitting a few buttons. The little bit of time needed to unite these two pieces of technology will enhance any company or educational program.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up the LCD projector and plug it in with the provided AC cord.

    • 2

Connect the projector to the laptop using the appropriate cable. The cable will have a dual pin set up, or the same pin attachment on both ends. Attach one end to the projector port and the other to the "video out" jack on the laptop. Many times these ports are blue for easy identification on computers. If you are unsure of the correct cable, it will be a RGB or VGA-type connection. Check the instructions provided with the projector to determine which cable is required. If the projector has multiple input ports, labeled one and two, select the first one.

    • 3

Connect the sound if needed. Run an 1/8-inch RCA type cable from the headphone jack of your laptop to the sound input jack of the projector. You may need a stereo patch cable. This cable will have one male jack for your laptop on one end and split, color-coded jacks on the other for the projector. Plug the connectors into the projector for left and right audio, matching the colors of the cable to the inputs on the projector.

    • 4

Turn the power on the projector and then the laptop.

    • 5

Turn on the external video function on the laptop once it has fully booted. This requires use of the "FN" button on your laptop keyboard and the appropriate function key. Look at the function keys because there may be an icon that looks like two screens. Press this key and the FN key simultaneously to initiate dual video on your laptop. If you are unsure which function key works, check the manual provided with the laptop and look for external video.
