How to Crochet Gift Baskets

Crocheted gift baskets can add a handmade touch to any gift-giving occasion. Fill a crocheted basket with scented soaps and crocheted washcloths, or use them to hold candies or baked goods for a sweet treat. Make crocheted gift baskets out of cotton, hemp, or twine for a sturdy basket that will hold its shape well.

Choose your materials. Using cotton yarn will make a basket that is colorful, soft and also sturdy. Try a worsted weight cotton yarn with a size "H" crochet hook. Or use hemp cord or twine from the craft store; use a smaller hook, size "F" or "G," to make a basket with these thinner materials.

Begin the basket's base. Crochet in the round by making five single crochet stitches in a magic loop. For each subsequent round, increase by five single crochet stitches. Stop when the basket's base reaches the desired size.

Work the sides of the basket. Crochet in the front loops only of the following round, making only one single crochet stitch in each single crochet stitch from the previous round (this is known as crocheting evenly in the round). Working in the front loops only for this round will help the sides stand up separately from the base so the basket should stand on its own. For each following round, crochet evenly in the round through both loops to build the sides of the basket. Continue until the basket reaches the desired height. Finish off and weave in your ends with a large eye blunt needle.

Add a handle, if desired. Attach your yarn with a slip stitch in any stitch of the basket, and make three single crochet stitches. Then chain one and turn, single crocheting across the row (three single crochet stitches). Continue making rows until your handle reaches the desired length, then bind off and sew the other end of the handle to the opposite side of the basket.

Embellish your basket by wrapping ribbon around the handle or threading it through the stitches on the basket's body. Or sew buttons around the top edge or glue sequins around the sides or handle.
