How to Attach a Bicycle to a Trainer
An indoor bicycle "trainer" or roller system is the ideal way for the avid bicyclist to get a good workout during the winter or other times when the roads are just too unsafe for a long ride. There are several styles of trainers, and you can pay anything from under $100 to thousands for a pro-level trainer. The vast majority operate on a similar principle: The front wheel is held immobile, and the back wheel is connected by the axle to a set of clamps so that it sits on a pair of roller bearings that can provide varying levels of resistance to simulate hill climbing.

1
Place the trainer on the floor and make sure that all four feet are in contact with the floor. If the floor is uneven, use a shim or pieces of cardboard until all four feet make equal contact. Some trainers will have adjustment knobs for the length of each leg to allow you to achieve a level platform. Consult the manufacturer's instructions to see if your model has this feature.
-
2
Remove the rear axle or "skewer" from the bike and replace it with the supplied skewer according to manufacturer's instructions.
-
-
3
Clamp the rear axle of your bike between the two axle clamps on the trainer and hand-tighten.
-
4
Adjust the alignment of the rear wheel so that the tire sits directly on the middle of the roller, using either the supplied adjustment knob or by tightening and loosening the clamps on either side of the axle according to manufacturer's instructions.
-
5
Place the supplied chock directly under the front wheel to hold it in place.
-
6
Adjust the resistance on the resistance knob or adjustment mechanism to zero, and then gradually increase once you start riding until you achieve a comfortable level of resistance.
