If you are a foreigner who is married to US Citizen, the process of become a US Citizen is relatively quick. First of all, to come over to the USA you need your future husband to apply for fiancé visa. Once you're approved for fiancé visa, you can come to the US and get married within 3 months of entering the US. You marriage must be legal, you need to get a marriage license from the town hall in your state and then you can get married in fro not a judge or have a traditional wedding ceremony.

      • Once you are legally married to a US Citizen, you can then apply for a green card.
      You need to fill out paperwork, go to your local INS office, go for an interview in front of an immigration officer together with your husband, get passport size photos and get fingerprinted in the INS office.

      • You can get a work authorization permit while you are waiting for your green card to get approved. Then you can look for a job legally.

      • Once you receive your green card, it is only valid temporary for 2 years because it is based on your marriage. This is done to prevent marriage fraud which is illegal. After that you will get a permanent green card valid for 10 years if you are still married. If you get divorced, you can apply by yourself for the 10 year green card

      • The law says that if you are married to a US Citizen for at least 3 years, you can apply for US citizenship. After the 3 years, send your application for US Citizenship to your INS office which is determined by in what state you live in.

      • Start preparing for the citizenship exam. Get books and tests on US history, American culture and laws. Practice for the test at home or take a class for citizenship and naturalization that's offered in a community college.

      • Get a date for the interview and bring all documents and be prepared for the interview by a Immigration officer. You will be asked questions about US history, politics, culture etc. You must also know English and be able to read, write and speak in English. You might have to write or read some sentences in English.

      • Then you will have a date for your naturalization ceremony. Dress to impress for the occasion and bring your video camera to record the official event. My naturalization ceremony was in Faneuil Hall in Boston in 2006. Then you will be called by name to receive your naturalization certificate and you will become a new US Citizen officially on that date. Then you can bring that naturalization certificate to the passport office and get a US Passport!
