Take inventory! What items do you have to sell that you are willing to take less than true value for? What services can you offer? Child care, pet sitting, baking, caregiving, errand running, landscape, carpentry, teaching? Think hard! Write descriptive ads detailing your items and/or your services and take good photos with either your own or a borrowed camera. Add measurements when needed and remember to look in your closets and sheds also! Consider asking friends/family or neighbors if they want to team up and sell or offer a service with you!

List your ads on Craigslist.com, and use Google to find more place to list for free or for little money. Use your local Yahoo.com groups to offer services or yard sell items. Check the free sections for items you can sell! List items on E-crater.com for free, or use etsy.com or ebay for small fees for each listing. If listing a service, be sure to offer to provide references for interested parties.

Check your emails often for replies. If your ads do not get any at all, consider rewording them. Be diligent and post often. Keep up the search in Google for more places to post your ads.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be willing to sacrifice some of your items for less than their value. You can possibly repurchase them later.

  • Household items sell best for me on craigslist but larger appliances and children's clothing and toys sell well also.

  • The most important tip is to NEVER GIVE UP! Be diligent in posting and reposting your ads, but do not be a spammer. Allow time for your ads to be found! Keep searching for more places that allow posting.

  • NEVER agree to meet strangers in private places. Always use a public meeting place during daylight hours and take someone with you when you meetup!

  • If the strangers must come to your home, always have someone else home with you and try to have the item outside if possible so to avoid them entering your home.

  • Always let someone else know where you are going and who you are meeting just to be on the safe side. You can never be too careful in this day and age.
