How to Apply for a College Teaching Job

There are thousands of colleges around the United States, ranging from prestigious private schools to local community colleges. All of these schools need professors and each school has their own specific requirements. If you want to apply for these positions it is best to fulfill all, or most of the school requirements so you can prove you are a better candidate than the other individuals apply for the position.

        Launch the Internet browser of your computer and navigate to the school in which you are interested. Most schools now only allow you to apply electronically (it is easier for them to keep track of all the applicants).

        Read through the requirements for the job. There is usually going to be required attributes and preferred attributes. The more you have of both the better your chances of getting hired.

        Complete your previous education experience. Community colleges allow you to only have a bachelors degree, however the school usually prefer at least a masters degree. Private institutions require at least a masters degree if not a doctorate in the field you are applying in.

        Fill out the previous teaching experience. This usually isn't required but is looked highly upon.

        Write a statement of purpose as to why you should be chosen for the teaching position. Also include any other details you might feel is helpful.

        Submit the application. Most teaching positions are posted at least a year in advance, so you might not hear back from the school for several months. However, you may want to take down the phone number of the school so you can stay in touch.
