How to Create a Recipe Card

Recipe cards are easy to make and require very few materials. They can be created using a computer and printer; however, a quick and simple way to create a recipe card is to write the recipe by hand on an index card. Recipes can be stored in small recipe card boxes, and filed by food or dish category. Recipe cards make nice gifts and party favors, especially when they are handwritten and personalized.   • Blank 3x5 or 4x6 index cards

      Choose an index card size. Keep in mind that standard recipe card holders are for 3x5 or 4x6 recipe cards. Index cards with lines on at least one side are helpful when writing a recipe by hand.

      Write the name of the dish on one or both sides of the index card.

      Write the recipe on the side with the lines. List the ingredients that will be needed in the order that they will be used.

      List the steps of the recipe and number each step.

      Include information such as the time needed for preparation, cooking time, and how many servings will be made.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use different colors of index cards for different types of meals. For example, pink cards can be used for desserts, while yellow cards can be used for side dishes.
