How to Choose a Wick by Brand for Your Soy Candles

Due to the differences in paraffin wax and soy wax candles, you cannot always use the same type of wicks. While many options are available, you do not want to use a wick when making soy wax candles that will add to the amount of soot the flame will emit. Natural fiber wicks with no lead or zinc cores or paraffin coating are the best choices. Since soy wax cannot be made into pillar candles, you don't need a free-standing wick. Instead use a stick or a pencil to hold the wick in place. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Check your local hobby and craft supply stores for candle making supplies.

    • 2

Read the packaging for the wicks available. Look for Pepperell or HTP brand wicks. Both manufacturers make wicks for soy candles.

    • 3

Look for 100 percent cotton or hemp braiding if you cannot find Pepperell or HTP brand wicks. Make sure there is no coating on the wicks. Packages will usually list if the wicks have a coating, but coating is pretty easy to see on a wick. It will look like the wick has a waxy shell. The wick pack should mention if it has a lead or zinc core. Stay away from metal core wicks.

Look at the number listed on the wick package. The smaller the number, the smaller the diameter of the wick. Choose a wick that will burn well with the jar you will use. For example, a small jelly jar will need a smaller diameter wick than a large mason jar.
