How to Track the Dow

The Dow is short for Dow Jones Industrial Average. The Dow is the most commonly quoted index and is often used as a gauge for the direction of the market and/or barometer of economic strength or weakness. There are numerous ways to track the Dow including by chart or your own portfolio. The popularity of this index makes the Dow an easy price to track.

      Go to Yahoo! Finance. Yahoo! Finance is the number one rated investment research site, according to Alexa.com. The chart in the top left pane tracks the Dow. Click directly on the chart to enlarge and customize.

      Add the Dow index to your portfolio as a benchmark or your virtual portfolio. The Dow Jones Industrial Average symbol is ^DJI, which can be looked up like a stock quote.

      Go to the Dow Jones Average website. Determine which average you are interested in tracking. For information on the current make-up of the fund, click on the index type and you will be provided with the index value, net change percentage, components and historical index value.

      Click on one of the fund products that you can purchase. Each of these products tracks the Dow in some way. In addition to product name, you will also see the exchange, provider and symbol which can be used to purchase shares in the fund or add to your virtual portfolio.
