Telephone or visit the clerk of the bankruptcy court where you believe the case in question is filed and pending. By providing the clerk with the name of the debtor, she is able to access basic information about the case, including the bankruptcy number.

Log on to the PACER Self Service Center, maintained by the Administrative Office of the United States Courts. PACER maintains information about cases pending in U.S. Appellate Courts, U.S. District Courts and U.S. Bankruptcy Courts. Through the PACER system you can obtain bankruptcy case numbers.

Connect with a law school, either in the brick and mortar world or through an Internet Web site maintained by such an institution. Many law schools provide electronic access to court records, including those of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. In some cases, this information is confined to the state in which the law school is located. In any event, law schools typically are able to assist you in accessing basic information about a bankruptcy case, including a bankruptcy case number.

The PACER system is limited to active cases. Therefore, if you need a bankruptcy number from a closed case, your best course is to contact the clerk of the bankruptcy court directly.
The PACER system does charge a fee for accessing records. Consequently, using the free services of either the bankruptcy court clerk or most law schools is a preferable initial course to take before resorting the PACER database.
