How to Make a Joker Halloween Costume

The Joker may easily be considered one of the most terrifying villains in superhero history. Appearing as Batman's nemesis in comics, games, movies and television shows, Joker has terrorized the residents of Gotham City and made Batman's life a sick and twisted freak show more times than most would care to count. Instructions

    • 1

Compile the clothing for the Joker costume. Joker wears black dress pants and shoes, and a purple suit coat with purple gloves. His vest is green. The shirt and tie beneath should match the outfit, but here you have some leeway in regards to color.

    • 2

Color your hair green. This should be done with a green hair dye. Choose products carefully, as some will wash out immediately while others are designed to last. If you do not want to color your actual hair, check costume shops or Halloween supply stores for a green wig.

    • 3

Apply a layer of white face paint to your entire face. Joker's whole face is covered by a layer of white paint. Include the chin, neck and ears if they will be showing from under the wig.

    • 4

Apply red face paint to the mouth to create Joker's signature killer smile. Cover the lips, and extend the smile up the cheeks, almost to the ears.

    • 5

Apply black face paint to the eyes. The paint should cover the eyelids, and at least an inch beyond the eyes in all directions. This is an optional step, depending on which Joker you choose to emulate. The original joker did not have eye makeup, but subsequent incarnations do.

    • 6

Get dressed and put on the gloves. Adorn the costume with Joker-esque decorations, such as as squirting flower, a ring buzzer or a deck of cards.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you are looking for Joker's clothes, check secondhand stores for old colorful coats, vests, gloves and other pieces. You could also rent a purple suit for the night. If the costume is a little baggy, that's fine.

  • Always check the ingredients and warnings on face paint products to be sure you are not allergic to the product. Be very careful when applying face paint to the eyes and mouth, because many of these products can be harmful if ingested or leaked into the eyes.
