How to Splice a Broken Garage Door Spring

A standard torsion spring is wound on a torsion tube and mounted above a garage door. Depending on the size of your garage door, it uses one or two springs. Releasing the tension on these springs is incredibly dangerous for a nonprofessional and can cause serious injury if not handled properly. It is advised that you use extreme caution when working with torsion springs. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Splicing a Broken Torsion Spring

    • 1

      Disassemble the spring clip.

    • 2

Pry one coil from the broken side of the spring with the flat-head screwdriver.

    • 3

Place the coil inside the "U" of the cable clip approximately two inches from the end of the coil.

    • 4

Repeat for the other half of the broken spring.

    • 5

Assemble the clip and tighten it evenly on both sides. It is very important that the clip be tight enough to prevent slippage while the spring is being wound.

    • 6

Confirm the door cables are correctly placed. Refer to your installation manual for illustrations on where this cable should be.

    • 7

Loosen both cable drums and replace the cables in each drum using 7/16" wrench. Starting with the left side cable drum (left side from the inside of the garage), rotate the drum until the cable is tight, then tighten the set screw.

    • 8

Hold the drum in place and lock the torsion tube with vice grips.

    • 9

Repeat this process for the right side drum (right side from the inside of the garage), except for locking down the torsion tube.

    • 10

Begin adding tension to the spring by inserting the winding bar into the winding cone and turning ¼ turn at a time. Refer to your installation manual for the appropriate number of total turns.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is strongly recommended that work with torsion springs should be performed only by professional garage door installers.

  • Torsion springs are under extreme amounts of pressure and can cause injury or even death if not handled properly.
