~~Check for internet, cable tv, and telephone packages~~

Quite a few service providers now have a bundle package where you can get your internet service, cable and telephone for one set price for a promotional period - generally 12 months. Don't worry about what the price is after you initially lower your monthly bill - we'll deal with that later.

~~Evaluate exactly what cable tv services you need~~

You might find that you don't watch the 100's of cable channels which have repeating shows all month, such as Showtime, HBO, or Encore. You might find that there's a core package from your cable tv provider which is cheaper and better suited to your viewing styles. Evaluate whether you need a more expensive digital cable tv or whether regular cable will do.

        ~~Evaluate your telephone needs~~

With the wide use of cell phones now, few people may actually need a landline telephone any longer. If you do need the land phone line though (for example, for a help line for a senior citizen), evaluate what long distance packet you may need. Perhaps your long distance calls are frequent enough for you to need a package for a monthly set fee, or, it could be that $.10 per minute is more suited to your needs.

Contact your current telephone service provider and ask for an analysis of your last year's bills to help you decide on your future needs.

~~Contact your service provider and ask to have your bill lowered~~

This tip is crucial to lowering your utility bill but so few people take advantage of bartering with the companies. Mention other providers in your area to give an additional push for your current company to keep your business. Generally, they'll lower your bill for 3 or 6 months and then rise it again. Put a reminder on your calendar to call just before it's about to increase again and barter the bill down again.

    Tips & Warnings

    • You'll never know if you can lower your cable tv, internet or telephone bill is you don't ask. Always call your provider and as for a reduction.

    • Be on the lookout for fliers advertising cable tv deals or cable tv packages and contact your service provider asking for a matching deal.

    • If you go for one of those introductory packages where you get -free- services (such as another 200 channels...sigh), make SURE you cancel prior to the fee being imposed and WATCH your bill to make sure you're not being charged for the additional cable channels.
