How to Evaluate a Return to Work Plan

A Return to Work plan (RTW) is a step-by-step outline of what duties someone who has been injured or recovering from a serious illness can perform while gradually introducing herself back to work. A RTW plan is designed using input from the employer, injured employee, doctor testimonial and unions when applicable. These plans are useful not only in lowering worker's compensation insurance rates, but in giving the employee the support she needs to get back on her feet.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure all parties, including the doctor or surgeon, worker's compensation insurance provider, the employee, the employer and the union representative are supportive of the plan. All parties should have played a part in the development of the plan.

    • 2

Review the plan to ensure it caters to the worker. Whether the worker has been out of commission due to injury or illness, a plan that returns him to work too soon is likely to cause more health problems. Similarly, a RTW plan that is too gradual may lead to boredom and frustration by the worker.

    • 3

Compare the RTW to the employee's original job description. The duties should align as much as possible.

    • 4

Brainstorm a solution to every problem. Consider workplace accommodations (see Resources) to facilitate the return.

    • 5

Plan reviews. Periodic check-ins are essential to ensuring the health and happiness of the employee. Reviews should include the same team members involved in the creation of the RTW plan.
