How to Calculate Mileage on Google Maps

Google Maps is a free tool provided on the popular Google website. This tool can be used for finding routes between addresses, checking traffic conditions or finding your favorite restaurant. Google Maps also allows you to accurately calculate the mileage between two or more addresses. Knowing the mileage of a trip is useful for comparing alternative routes or estimating fuel costs. Calculating mileage is quick and easy.

Instructions

1. Navigate your Internet browser to maps.google.com.

2. Click on "Get Directions" in the upper left-hand side of the screen. This link can be found on the left side of the screen on the blue title bar just below the Google logo. Clicking this link will reveal several text boxes you must complete.

3. Enter the address of the starting location in the text box labeled with the letter "A" appearing in a green circle.

4. Enter the address of the ending location in the text box labeled with the letter "B" appearing in a green circle. If you want to calculate the mileage between three different locations, click on the link "Add Destination" just below the second address box. This will display an additional text box. Enter the first destination in the box labeled "B" and the final destination in the box labeled "C."

5. Click on "Get Directions." Google will calculate the mileage between the addresses you entered and display this information, along with proposed routes, just below where you entered the addresses.

Tips & Warnings

• Once you have calculated the mileage on Google Maps, you can use this information to estimate the fuel cost of the trip you are planning. Simply divide the mileage calculated by Google Maps by the average miles per gallon of your vehicle. The U.S. government has provided this information for many cars, which can be found at fueleconomy.gov.
