How to Find Deleted Files on XP

There are two basic ways to locate deleted files on your computer. You can simply check your recycle bin, or you can use a special program that will let you look for deleted files. You can download such a program for free online.

      Go to your desktop and double-click on the icon marked "recycle bin." If you haven't emptied it yet, most of your deleted files will be there.

      Download a restoration program such as Pandora or File Scavenger if you can't find your deleted files in the recycle bin.

      Open the installation file for the restoration program and click "Next" through each part until it installs.

      Open the restoration program, such as Pandora. Exit the Wizard screen, since you already checked your recycle bin. Click on your hard drive where it's listed on the left. Make sure the "browse" tab is highlighted at the top of the screen.

      Wait for the program to scan your hard drive, then click on a folder on your drive. A box at the top of the screen will list any deleted files there, as well as what percentage of the those files is overwritten.

      Right-click on the file and select "Recover to" if you wish to get the file back, if it's not overwritten.
