How to Fix Code 39 on Windows Vista

A Code 39 error on Windows Vista means that device drivers such as CD-DVD, floppy drives and other media hardware is either missing or corrupt. The error code is the same for all Windows operating systems, the fix varies. You can fix it yourself a couple of ways either manually or automated with Microsoft Fix it. A Code 39 can happen after installing new drives, upgrading old ones, or some media software will cause a Code 39 error.

Instructions

  1. Fixing Code 39

    • 1

Select "Run," from the "Accessories" menu, type "regedit" then click "OK." Windows will ask for user permission, click "Continue."

    • 2

Click "Edit" on the menu bar, then click "Find." Carefully copy and paste the key below in the "find what" window, click "Find Next." This can take some time. Or find the key manually. It should be the first key in the series, there are several exactly the same.

Check the key to be sure it is the correct one, in the right window pane find the "Data value" which will read DVD/CD-ROM while the "Class data" will read CD-ROM.

    • 4

Right-click the key "{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}" and click "Export." In the next window name the key "DVD/CDRom key" and click "Save."

    • 5

Right-click on the "UpperFilters" and select delete; when prompted to confirm delete, select "Yes." Repeat this for the "LowerFilters" key.

    • 6

Close the registry editor and reboot your computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the above steps did not fix the problem, you can restore the key this way: Double-click it and when prompted for permission select "Continue;" click "Yes" at the next prompt. Since this is the original key, it will not cause problems or conflicts.

  • The automated option is to use Microsoft's Mr. Fix It, which will scan your system and let you know what the problem is and if a solution has been applied.

  • Sometimes third-party software will make changes to filters that control devices such as a DVD or CD drive. You may need to uninstall the software; this would be a last resort.

  • Be sure you back up the registry key as instructed and that you are in the correct key before deleting anything. If you are unsure of what you are doing, seek professional help.
