Test the pH of the soil in multiple locations using a soil pH test kit. If the soil is below 7.0, then it is acidic and can be made more alkaline with the use of lime.

Verify the soil needs of the plants intended for the garden. Many plants such as citrus trees actually thrive in acidic soil, so it always important to double check the necessary soil pH before making changes.

Add 4 oz. of lime per square yard to the soil and till in the lime.

Repeat these steps for three to four growing seasons or until the desired pH is achieved.
