How to Make Fleece Socks

Just the idea of a pair of cozy fleece socks conjures images of curling up on the couch with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate. Fleece socks are easy stocking stuffers--they can even be the stocking that you stuff. Making your own warm and colorful polar fleece socks is a quick project that is appropriate for beginning and experienced sewers alike. Because of the thickness of the fleece, these socks are more like booties that can be worn around the house, rather than socks that you would wear inside a shoe.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Getting the Material Ready

    • 1

Take a pair of socks that you already own to use as a model for your pattern and trace the sides onto the fleece that you want to use. Sock patterns are also available online. Once you've traced the sock, add about 1/2 inch to the "top" line of the sock so that there will be enough material to comfortable cover the top of your foot, add 1/4 inch to the "back" part of the sock to leave room for a hem. Then place your foot on the fleece and trace around your foot for the sole. Add about 1/4 inch all around to leave room for sewing it together. Sock patterns are also available online.

    • 2

The place your foot on the fleece and trace around your foot for the sole. Add about 1/4 of an inch all around to leave room for sewing it together. Cut out four soles, two from the regular fleece and two from the fleece with rubber grips.

    • 3

Cut out four sock sides from the regular fleece. The sock "sides are the part that will go over the sides and top of your feet.

    • 4

Pin together the two of the sock sides. Repeat. They will have a seam down the center, straight down the center top of your foot with an additional seam attaching them to the soles.

    • 5

Pin together one piece of the regular fleece soles and one piece the rubber-grip fleece soles, make sure the rubber grips face the outside or what will be the outside sole of your sock. Repeat.

    Put It Together

    • 6

Sew together the front and back seams of your two pinned fleece sock sides (these are not the shortest seam where you foot will enter the sock, or the flat bottom seam which will be attached to the sole.) Repeat for other sock.

    • 7

Sew together your fleece soles. Repeat with other sole.

    • 8

Attach the soles of the sock to the sides that you sewed together, but with the rubber-grip sole on the inside of the sock so that you are sewing the sole on while the sock is inside out. It is best to do this using a back stitch or herringbone stitch which will allow some movement and stretchiness to your seams.

    • 9

Reverse the sock so that the bottom of the sole with the rubber grips is on the outside, and you're done.

Tips & Warnings

  • This project can be done either by hand or with a sewing machine.

  • You can add letters or flowers as embellishments to the sock after you are finished.
