How to Fix a Crackle on a Creative Sound Blaster

Creative's Sound Blaster line of sound cards has been providing PC users with audio since the first version of the card was released in 1989. The cards usually give trouble-free operation for years after installation, but there are occasions when a Sound Blaster sound card may develop a crackle, an audible intermittent static that mars the quality of delivered sound. If your Sound Blaster sound card has developed this crackling, it can usually be fixed by taking a few troubleshooting steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Update the audio driver for your Sound Blaster sound card by connecting with the Sound Blaster support website, and downloading the latest driver for your specific sound card and operating system. Follow the manufacturer instructions for installing the new drivers and reboot your PC. Test the audio to determine if the crackle is gone; if not, then you'll have to troubleshoot the card itself.

    • 2

Check the audio cable connections between the Sound Blaster and your speakers. The cables should be plugged in securely until the base of the mini-plug is firmly against the sound card. Test the audio to check if the crackling persists.

    • 3

Examine each audio cable for any visible physical breaks or fraying in the cables. Wiggle the mini-plugs to make sure they're secure in the plug housing. Switch the cable for a new one if the mini-plug is loose. Switch speakers from plug to plug to see if the crackle moves from speaker to speaker. If it does, replace that specific speaker cable to end the crackle.

Turn off the PC and unplug the power from the power supply. Open your PC and check that the Sound Blaster is securely placed into its PCI slot. Press the top of the card firmly to set it into the slot and then return the cover to your PC. Plug in the power supply and turn on the PC. Test the audio for any remaining crackle. If the crackle persists, then move the sound card.

Open the PC case again, making sure to turn off the power and unplug the power cord beforehand. Unscrew the Sound Blaster from its PCI slot and relocate it to another PCI slot, removing the panel that blocks the rear of the slot at the case. If possible, leave an empty slot between the sound card and any other installed cards. Other operating cards in your PC may sometimes interfere with the Sound Blaster sound card, causing the crackle. Secure the card into the new slot and screw it into place.

Move the panel that blocked the rear of the new slot to the old case location of the sound card, and screw the panel into the case to block the old port in order to prevent dust from entering the computer via the open slot. Close the PC and plug the power cord back into the power supply. Turn on the PC and test for crackle. If the crackle persists, then it is a hardware problem with the card itself.
