How to Hook Up Your Stereo to Your PC or Laptop

Listening to music or watching a movie through a stereo connection is an almost unbeatable sound experience. Even if you store all of your music, videos, pictures and other media on your PC, you can still use a stereo to play your media, just as you would a CD, tape or record player.

Instructions

    • 1

Reduce the volume on your computer to a minimum. You will be able to raise the volume on the speaker side.

    • 2

Connect the RCA cable to the sound card via the "Line Out" port, typically located in the back of the computer. The port should be marked by a speaker icon, and is usually colored green.

    • 3

Connect the other end of the RCA cable to the "Line In" ports of your speaker system. Connect the jacks to the ports of the same color.

    • 4

Turn on your stereo and your computer.

    • 5

Open the music player of your choice on your PC and play your favorite tunes through your stereo.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can hook your computer to a projector or TV to watch video as well.

  • Adjust the volume on the stereo, not the computer.
