How to Allow Another Computer to Access My Remote Desktop Over the Internet
A remote desktop allows you to access your computer when you're physically away from it. You can use this feature to connect to your computer wirelessly using a second computer or even a smartphone. Once connected, you'll be able to run programs and edit files. To do this, you first have to set up your computer to be accessible for remote connection and have the network set up correctly.

Check your version of Microsoft Windows. Certain XP and Vista editions like the Home Basic version don't allow this feature. You'll need to upgrade to a professional or higher version.

Log on to the desired computer as an administrator. Click the "Start" button and click "Control Panel." From the list, select "Performance and Maintenance" and then "System" (in applicable Vista editions, the "System" option will be located directly under the control panel).

Click the "Remote Settings" option. When the pop-up window appears, check the box that says "Allow Remote Systems Connections to This Computer." Provide the administrator password if it's requested.

Go to the Windows firewall located under "Control Panel," then "Security Center." Either disable the firewall or make sure that exceptions are allowed. If the firewall is enabled, click the "Exceptions" tab and make sure "Remote Desktop" is checked.

If you have an antivirus program running, be sure the firewall option is disabled.

Go back to the "System" folder in the control panel. Write down the computer name as you'll need it later to connect. Be sure the computer is connected to the Internet and running in Normal mode (if it's turned off or in Sleep mode, it will prevent remote access).
