How to Refill an HP Officejet Cartridge
HP Officejet printer cartridges can be expensive. However, refilling an HP Officejet cartridge, which are mainly the HP 45, 22, 920, and 901 cartridges, is easier than going to the store and buying a new ink cartridge once you learn how to refill it. Instead of wasting loads of cash every year on new ink cartridges, buy an ink refill kit and save some money.

1
Open your Officejet printer and take out the ink cartridge. Buying an ink refill kit made specially for your ink cartridge will speed things up because the kit, most likely, will come with directions for refilling your specific ink cartridge. However, you can use any kind of ink refill kit that has the ink you need.

Open the ink refill kit and take out the syringe. Place the ink cartridge on a few layers of paper towels and locate the filling hole; Officejet ink cartridges have filling holes on the bottom of the casing. Slowly push the syringe into the sponge of the cartridge and lightly squeeze the ink into the sponge. Do not apply too much pressure when filling the ink cartridge or you will expand the sponge, which causes ink to flow unevenly. Fill the ink cartridge until the sponge looks moist; it is always better to fill the cartridge less than the limit because ink dripping out of the cartridge is harmful to the printer.

Check the ink cartridge for any signs of excess ink, such as ink gathering at the filling hole or ink dripping out of the filling hole. If there is any excess ink, press the sponge with a paper towel so that the paper towel absorbs the excess ink. Now, clean the area around the filling hole so that there are no smudges whatsoever.

Attach the ink cartridge to the printer and run "head cleaning." Print out a few pages to check if you have installed the cartridge properly.
