How to Disable an XP Login Password

When a Windows XP-based computer is shared by many people in a household, some users may want to use XP's password-protected login names. However, if some users are children whose computer use must be monitored or if you have a user who frequently forgets his password, it might be beneficial to disable the passwords for those logins. Here's how to edit properties for those user accounts on Windows XP.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to Windows XP with a user account that has administrative rights. This does not have to be the true "Administrator" account.

    • 2

      Click "Start," then "Control Panel."

    • 3

Click "User Accounts" if your Control Panel is set to "Category View," or double-click it if the Control Panel is set to "Classic View."

    • 4

Click "Change an account," then click the icon representing the account for which you want to disable the password.

    • 5

Click "Remove the password." You will receive a warning message reminding you that removing the password disables some functionality, such as file encryption. Click the "Remove Password" button to finalize the change.
