Apply early. According to the Washington Post, employers begin hiring temporary employees in early November to ensure new employees are properly trained by the onset of the shopping season, Black Friday. As early as October, begin searching online to see who is hiring, or visit businesses and fill out applications.

Don't limit yourself to applying at retail businesses. There are plenty of other job openings that need temporary employees to work throughout the holiday season. For example, according to Washington Post, the delivery company UPS hired about 50,000 part-time employees nationwide that sorted, loaded and distributed packages. Other businesses may be in need of temporary accountants, administrative assistants and clerical workers to assist in wrapping up end-of-the-year projects or accounts.

Be flexible. Many temporary seasonal jobs are in need of employees to work in the late-night or early-morning hours. It's becoming a trend for retail stores to have early-bird specials or have a two-day period when the store is open for 24 hours. When applying or interviewing, it's important to let the employer know that you're flexible, and your flexibility will help you land a holiday job, according to the Washington Post.
