How to Estimate Bundles of Shingles for Roofing
Shingles are available in several different styles and materials, and are among the most commonly used roofing materials. Their low cost and quick installation add to their appeal over other roofing materials. The majority of roofing shingles are sold in bulk bundles, each of which has a set coverage in square feet. Estimating the amount of roofing material is one of the first steps in the roofing process and is also one of the easiest. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the length of a roof face (side to side) and the width (eave to ridge) using the tape measure. For hip type roofs with triangular areas, break the roof face into a rectangular section and 2 triangular sections and measure their dimensions.
-
2
Multiply the length times the width of the roof face to find its area in square feet. For hip type roofs, find the area of the rectangular section first, then multiply the length times the width of one triangular section to find the combined area of both triangles; the two triangular sections of the roof face will have the same area as a rectangle of the same dimension. Add the first rectangular area to the combined triangular areas to find the total area of the roof face.

3
Repeat steps 1 and 2 on all remaining roof faces and add to find the total area of the roof in square feet.
-
4
Call a local roofing supply company to find the total area coverage (in square feet) per bundle of shingles.
-
5
Divide the total area of the roof found in step 3 by the coverage per bundle of shingles to find the total number of bundles needed; round to the next highest whole bundle if your calculation produces a decimal.
