How to Do System Restore on Vista

Windows Vista automatically backs up your important system files and programs. This process creates "Restore Points." If you have problems with your PC, but cannot identify them, your best option is to use system restore. System restore will not affect your personal files, such as your photos and documents; however, it will remove any programs you've installed after the restore point.

Instructions

    • 1

Close your running programs and open Windows. Access your "Start" menu, and click on "All Programs."

    • 2

Choose "Accessories," "System Tools" and then "System Restore." Click on "Next."

    • 3

Choose your restore point. If you are using system restore because your PC is having problems, choose a date prior to when the problem began. Click "Next" when you've made your selection.

    • 4

Click "Yes" when the dialog box appears. This starts the system restore process. Leave your PC alone for 30 minutes to an hour; the process takes awhile.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your PC appears frozen, or if the process takes longer than a few hours, reboot your system and try again in safe mode. Hold the "F8" key while your computer is rebooting to enter safe mode.
