How to Secure the Canvas to Rollers on a Quilting Frame

A quilting frame holds your quilting taut while you work. Many quilters prefer a roller-style quilting frame, which allows a large quilt to be handled in a more manageable way. The quilt is basted onto canvas strips attached to the rollers. Secure your own canvas to rollers on a quilting frame to expand your options or make custom rollers to fit your quilting frame. A similar method is used for long arm quilting frames to machine quilt your quilt.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the roller on your quilt frame. Allow at least one inch to each side when determining how long to cut your quilt roller canvas strips.

    • 2

Cut strips of heavyweight canvas slightly shorter than the rollers for your quilting frame. Make the strips approximately 3 inches wide for a very narrow roller or as much as 5 to 6 inches wide for a heavier and larger quilt frame roller.

    • 3

Serge or zigzag stitch around all four sides of each canvas strip. Choose a fairly dense stitch and use a heavyweight needle in your sewing machine or serger for the best result.

    • 4

Place a canvas strip against the wooden roller, lining the long edge up with the roller. Staple one end of the canvas to the wooden roller, then pull taut and staple the other end to the roller. Add staples from every few inches to secure the canvas to rollers on the quilt frame. Check to make sure all staples are flush with no protruding edges.

    • 5

Baste your quilt top to the canvas strips on your quilting frame by hand or machine. Secure into the frame and quilt.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the same methods to attach canvas to needlework scroll frames.

  • Cloth tape, adhesive hook and loop tape, or duct tape may be used to attach canvas to the rollers on a quilting frame as well, and are favored for long arm quilting frames.

  • Check your staples regularly to ensure that they are secure.
