How to Repair Flex Duct Work
Flex ductwork allows you to make complex twists, bends and angles in your ductwork. Its main use is the final connection from the main duct trunk to the HVAC grille. If the grilles don't properly line up with the main duct trunk and hard pipe was used, a lot of fittings and labor would be required to make the final connections. Using flex duct saves this trouble. Occasionally, flex duct may rip or tear and need to be repaired. Flex duct may look complicated or hard to repair, but it is actually fairly easy to work with. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Utility knife
- Wire cutter
- 4-inch-long metal sleeve
- Clamps
- Screwdriver
- Duct tape

Cut out the damaged section of flex ductwork by slicing through the outer and inner jackets with a utility knife. Cut the wire coil with your wire cutters.

Slide each side of the inner jacket over a 4-inch metal sleeve. Butt them together in the middle of the sleeve and tape them together with two wraps of duct tape.

Secure the connection with two clamps placed over the taped inner jacket. Tighten the clamp down until it's tight.

Pull the outer jacket over the inner jackets and butt them tight together in the middle. Tape the jackets together with at least two wraps of duct tape.

Tips & Warnings
Turn off the HVAC unit before repairing flex ductwork. The air blowing out of the ducts could blow insulation particles around. These could possibly get in the eye and cause irritation.
