How to Use a PCMCIA Card Slot

PCMCIA slots, also called PC card slots are openings on the side of laptop computers used for expanding hardware capabilities. These cards are not used very often in laptops anymore, as they were mostly used for modems and network cards, and almost all laptops come with these functions built in. If you have a laptop with a PCMCIA slot, they are relatively easy to use and do provide an extra option for adding hardware.

Instructions

Verify that you have a slot. Turn the computer on its side and look for a slot that is about as wide as a credit card and as thick as a couple of credit cards stacked on top of one another. Sometimes these slots came with two slots stacked on top of each other.

Insert a PC card when the computer is turned off. You can also insert the card while the computer is on.

Remove the card. You can remove the card at any time, but if you wish to remove the card while the computer is on, you will have to click on the icon on the taskbar that allows you to shut the hardware down first.
