How to Make a Guestbook for a Web Page

A guestbook for a Web page is a good way for people to leave you a message about your page, whether to tell you they enjoyed reading your site or just to say hello. Other people who visit your guestbook are also able to see what other people say about your site. Normally, when making a guestbook entry, you can just click on the form and fill out your name, your email address and a message. Registration is not required to sign a guestbook but it is to create one. Most guestbooks are also free.

Instructions

    • 1

Search online for a guestbook. Do this by navigating to a search engine like Google, and search for "free guestbook." One site to use is Smart Guestbook (www.smartgb.com). Click on the link in the search results, or type the address directly in your browser.

Fill out the form on the main page. This information is required in order to get your guestbook. If you are worried about privacy, you do not have to include your last name in the "Your Name" field. You also must type a valid email address because account details are sent to your email. Click "Create Guestbook."

Review the details on the next page. You may now change the settings of your guestbook. Near the bottom of the page are drop-down boxes. Change each of these if you wish. Click "Save Settings" when you are finished to go to the next page. If you wish, you may log in to your Guestbook Administration to change more advanced options.

Set up your guestbook on your Web page. Choose either the plain, text-only link" or the HTML code. If you choose the HTML code, you have a few different options. Review your options and pick which one you like the most. For this example, we'll choose the logo and text link. Highlight the code in the box below, and press "Ctrl" and "C" on your keyboard.

Navigate in another browser window to your website, if you have not already. Log in to your site if necessary. Go to the part of your site where you edit the information on your page. Normally it is some type of button you can click that says "Edit." Decide where you want to place the guestbook link. The main page may be the best part of your site to place it on.

    • 6

Paste the HTML code by pressing "Ctrl" and "V" in the section you have other HTML listed. You may want to place this code at the very bottom of your page. Click "Preview" to make sure your link looks okay and it is where you want it. If you are satisfied with your changes, click "Save." Your guestbook is now ready for use for other people to click on, sign and review their message.

Tips & Warnings

  • HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language. This language is how Web pages are created.

  • You may want to leave a test message to make sure your guestbook is functioning properly. You can always go back later and remove it.

  • You may come across people that will leave negative or offensive comments in your journal, so be sure to regularly review the messages people post.
