How to Make an Icon for the Address Bar When Your Web Page Is Displayed
The tiny icons that are shown in the web browser's address bar are called "favicons." These icons are small, 16 x 16 pixels images that are placed in the root of the web page. A favicon is created using graphics software, such as Adobe Photoshop. Most graphics programs need a plug-in to export an image as a favicon. The image must be saved as "favicon.ico" and uploaded to the root of the web page. A web browser automatically recognizes the image file and adds it to the address bar when the user reads the website. It is also added to a bookmark if the user saves the URL to read later.

1
Open your graphics software. The graphics program you use needs to be able to save a file as an .ico file. The Resources link provides a free plug-in for Adobe Photoshop. After the graphics software loads, open the image you want to use as the favicon.

2
Reduce the image size to 16 pixels wide and 16 pixels for the height. Images that have too much detail don't look attractive at such a small size. If you can't distinguish the image details, it's better to choose another favicon.

3
Export and save the file as a .ico file. Ensure you save the file as "favicon.ico." If file is not given this name, the favicon will not display in the user's web browser. To export the image as a favicon, most software applications have the process in the "Save As" dialog window. Other software exports the image by clicking "File" then "Export" from the main toolbar.

4
Upload the file to the root of your website domain. The way you upload the file is dependent on your host provider. Most host providers have an online interface where you can upload the file from the online application.

5
Open a web browser and navigate to your website's homepage. As soon as you access the page, the browser downloads the favicon.ico file and displays it in the address bar. Bookmark the page and the icon is displayed in the bookmark link.
