How to Make the Resolution on My Laptop Bigger

Most laptops, regardless of screen size, allow you the option to change their screen resolution. This enables you to change how much apparent space you have on your desktop. A higher resolution will mean more space on your screen, smaller icons and text and more room for more windows. A smaller resolution will mean larger icons and text, but less space on your screen. Whether you use a Mac or Windows, raising your screen resolution is relatively simple.

Instructions

  1. Screen Resolution in Windows

    • 1

Right-click anywhere on your desktop that has free space and select "Properties." The resulting windows is an applet that lets you choose your background image, theme, display properties and more.

    • 2

Click the "Settings" tab. Here you will see a picture of a screen, a color quality drop-down menu and a slider that lets you select screen resolution. If you drag the slider as far to the right as you can towards the "More" text, you will choose to use the highest resolution your computer allows.

    • 3

Click "Apply" to complete the changes. Your monitor may flicker or turn dark for a few moments as it adjusts to the changes. When the changes are complete you will see your desktop in your chosen resolution, as well as a dialog box asking if you want to keep these changes. If you select "Yes," nothing will change. If you select "No," your desktop will revert to its old settings, and you can choose another. Press "OK" when you're satisfied with the screen resolution.

    Screen Resolution on a Mac

    • 4

Open your System Preferences by clicking the icon in the Dock, or by clicking on the Apple icon in the upper left hand corner of your screen and selecting "System Preferences."

    • 5

Click on the "Displays" icon, then click on the tab labeled "Display." You should see a list of available screen resolutions in a box, as well as a screen brightness slider.

    • 6

Select the largest possible resolution, which will be displayed at the bottom of the list. Unlike with Windows, the changes will take place immediately, and the system will not ask you if you want to revert. However, if you want to change back, simply click on the previous resolution. To complete the changes, simply exit System Preferences--the changes are already saved.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your display settings will show you the largest resolution your computer can use. If you still wish to have a larger resolution, you may need to invest in another screen or a separate monitor.

  • If you have a custom video card you may be able to set a custom screen size for dual monitors or other features, but if you do not have these features available, you may lose your ability to see the Start menu and your icons. Modify your video card's settings at your own risk.
