1
Choose a container for your succulent plant to place in the hanging basket. Use a terra cotta container rather than a plastic one, because succulents have a longer life span than plastic containers. Make sure your container has 1 1/2-inch draining holes and fits easily into the hanging basket.

2
Mix together one part coarse sand, one part volcanic scoria, three parts soil-less potting soil and one part perlite. Spread a handful of pea gravel at the bottom of the container. Fill one third of the container with your potting soil mixture and pat down.

3
Tilt the nursery pot housing your succulent and gently work the plant out of the container. Hold on to the plant if it is spiny with either a pair of tongs or a towel. Brush the roots lightly with a rooting hormone like Dip 'N Grow.
-
4
Place the succulent in the container and pack the rest of the potting mixture around the plant. The base of the plant should be an inch below the rim. Lift the plant up and water at the base. Allow the water to flow from the draining holes. Place in a hanging basket.

5
Hang your plant according to its light requirements. Some succulents need full sunlight, while others need partial sunlight and will discolor under too much sun. If you are hanging indoors, place the succulent next to a south-facing window with a sheer curtain protecting it from direct sun.

Tips & Warnings
Fertilize your succulent like you would a houseplant with an all-purpose fertilizer every month.
Test for overwatering or underwatering by pressing a finger into the first few inches of the potting soil to determine if it feels moist. Allow the top soil to dry out between waterings.
