How to Do Renaissance Hairdos

Renaissance hairstyles re-visited ancient Roman and Greek hairstyles, adding more flair and embellishments such as pearls, ribbon or jewels. They almost always consisted of braids--either small ones that were pinned around the head or larger braids woven with ribbon or cloth. To style your own hair in a Renaissance fashion, make sure your hair is clean and dry. Trying to braid wet hair is much more difficult and makes the hair susceptible to snags and tangles. Does this Spark an idea?

Use a hair brush to detangle your hair. Run your fingers through it to make sure it can be easily handled and separated as you are braiding it. Gather a 3 inch section of hair on the right side of your head at your eyebrow level. Braid the section from root to tip and secure with a hair elastic. Repeat on the left side of your head.

Pull the two braids so that they hug your head like a crown and meet in the middle, securing with bobby pins if necessary. Bind the two braids together and unbraid any extra hair that was not included in the braid crown. Gather the rest of your hair and create a single, large braid that runs straight down your back. Secure with a hair elastic.

Use a headband that is embellished with pearls or jewels to top off the look. You can either secure the headband sideways so that it rests over your forehead, or in the usual headband style so that the jewels or pearls run in a semi-circle over the top of your head. Gently mist the entire style with a small amount of hair spray to eliminate flyaways or broken ends that may be sticking out from the braids.
