How to Hook Up a Telephone Wall Jack
Learning to install additional telephone jacks at your home can save money and make life more convenient. There are a number of electronic devices that require jacks, and having a jack in every room will allow easy access to telecommunication lines for those devices.
Things You'll Need
- Wire strippers
- Drywall saw
- Screwdriver
- Drill/driver
- 4-wire phone wire
- Electrical wall-box
- Phone jack plate
- Wood screws

Installing the phone jack

Decide where you would like to place the new jack and locate the wall stud.

Mark the wall stud for the location of the jack.

Outline the wall box with a pencil at the edge of the stud.

Use a drywall saw to cut out the opening for the box.

Run the wire through the wall, pulling from the new jack to the nearest existing jack, leaving no less than 10 inches of additional wire through the knockout in the box.

Attach the box with screws.

Strip 3/8 of an inch of the protective coating from the end of each wire.

Connect the wire to the screws in the jack plate by color (red to red, etc.)

Secure the jack plate with screws.

Plug your device into the new jack and test it by making a phone call, sending an email or sending a fax to a friend.
