How to Set Up a Linksys Router As a Proxy Server

      Connect antennas to the router. On the port labeled "Internet," plug the Ethernet cable from your broadband Internet provider into the port. Take the other Ethernet cable and plug it into one of the unused ports. Take the other end of the same cable and plug it into an Ethernet port on your computer.

      Linksys router models all differ a bit, yet the general specs are the same in each model. The setup for all of them will be nearly identical. Start your Web browser and begin the configuration.

      Open your Web browser and go to http://192.168.1.1/. You will see a pop-up box, and be prompted for a password and user name. Your default user name will be either blank or "admin." The default password is also "admin."

      You can now change and access all of the configuration options available for the router. The Linksys router is programmed with default settings that enable it to operate as a proxy server after you signed into the system.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wireless router users should set an SSID. This identifies the router as yours, in addition to configuring WEP, which will encrypt all of your wireless traffic.
