How to Find Extra Storage for Blankets

Many households accumulate extra blankets over the years. They are not small items to store, but they can serve multiple purposes so storing them doesn't have to mean finding more shelf room. If blankets in the house are so plentiful that extra storage is not enough, consider donating some blankets to a local charity or using the fabric to create pillows or other sewing crafts. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Functional Storage

    • 1

Use a blanket storage rack to display some of the more decorative blankets and quilts. This serves as decoration as well as storage. Depending on how many bars the rack has, it should store at least three blankets.

    • 2

Place folded blankets at the end of the beds for decoration. Use either one blanket folded long and thin, then draped over the foot of the bed, or two or more blankets folded squarely and displayed overlapping diagonally at the foot of the bed.

    • 3

Place extra blankets on the backs of sofas, love seats or armchairs for decoration. One blanket can be spread out on the back of a sofa, or two or more blankets can be layered. Another display option is to fold the blankets squarely, and drape them side by side in a diamond shape, with one corner of each blanket pointing toward the sofa's seat cushions.

    • 4

Use extra blankets to cover couches and chairs in households with pets. The blankets can be stored next to the furniture or in a basket when people are home or using the furniture. Before leaving the house or going to bed, drape the blankets over the cloth furniture to protect the furniture from pet hair.

    • 5

Store a blanket or two in the family's vehicles for safety purposes. Depending on how many people are in a family and how cold temperatures get, store more than one blanket in the trunk of a vehicle. Blankets can help keep people warm if they are stranded in a vehicle.

    Compact Storage

    • 6

Blankets should be stored as compactly as possible. The most compact way to store blankets is to vacuum-pack them. Some home and bath stores sell vacuum packaging systems that will flatten blankets to a fraction of their actual size.

    • 7

A homemade vacuum storage system can be created by using a large trash bag and a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment. Place the blankets in the trash bag, then gather the opening in one hand and place the vacuum hose through the opening with the other hand.

    • 8

To create the compact bag, turn the vacuum on to suck the air out of the bag. Seal it as tightly as possible. This method is not as effective as vacuum packaging storage systems from the store, but it is somewhat effective.
