Inspect the nook carefully. Use a pencil and tape measure to take exact measurements to find out how much material you need to purchase to complete the job.

Utilize the stud finder to determine if the nook is bracketed. Find out if the wall studs are far back and determine how far they go. Wall studs should be present, so no work should be done to affect studs that are already set. Make a decision on the number of shelves required. Find out the load the bookshelf will be able to bear, which is based on the measurement taken prior to beginning the project. A fully loaded bookshelf weighs 20-25 pounds per running foot, or 60-75 pounds for a 3' wide shelf.

Put on the safety goggles and gloves before beginning any building project. Install the "L" brackets. Use the tape measure and level to determine the position of the brackets in relation to each other. Use three "L" brackets to a side if the bookshelf is over 12 inches in depth. Otherwise, two "L" brackets to a side is all you need.

Use the power drill to insert each 1 1/2-inch support screw into the studs. The bookshelf should be bracketed by studs. Place holders for every screw prior to installing the supports if the nook isn't bracketed.

Place the bookshelf on top of supports. After the completion of installation, check your work against the level. Make sure that your work is sturdy and straight. Remember that the materials you're using can have an aesthetic affect on total decor of the room.
