How to Crochet a Beret With Acrylic Yarn
If you can crochet in the round, you can crochet a beret. Using an acrylic yarn for your crocheted beret will make it machine-washable. Acrylic yarns come in a variety of weights and colors, so choose one that suits your style and then find a hook to match. Check the label on your yarn for hook size recommendations.

1
Crochet the body of the beret in the round. To do this, chain three stitches and slip stitch in the first chain to make a circle. Chain three, and make five more double crochet stitches in the circle. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial chain-3, and now you have your foundation circle.
-
2
Increase your circle by six stitches in every round. This means you will make two double crochet stitches in every stitch for round two; for round three, you will double crochet in one stitch, and make two double crochets in the following stitch. Continue to increase in this pattern until your crocheted circle is as wide as you want your beret to be.

3
Work one row of even double crochet stitches after your beret circle reaches its desired size.
-
4
Now decrease your beret by working backward in your rounds; for every stitch you made two stitches on the increase rounds, make a "two together" stitch on the decrease rounds. Continue to decrease in this pattern until the brim of your crochet matches the circumference of your head.

5
Work two to five rounds (depending on your preferred look) of single crochet stitches evenly after you have made your brim. This will add a band around the brim of your beret to help it stay on your head securely.

Tips & Warnings
Acrylic yarns do not have a very soft drape; they stitch in a stiff manner. To make your beret in a slouchy style, crochet your circle larger than you think you want it to be.
