How to Refill Canon Printer Ink
Once your Canon printer runs out of ink, you may think you need to go back to the store and buy a new cartridge. This isn't always the case, however. Ink cartridges are expensive, and if your original cartridges are in good condition you can refill the ink yourself. You'll need to purchase a Canon ink refill kit to make sure you get the right ink and special instructions specifically for your Canon printer. Refill kits cost much less than new ink cartridges, and soon you'll be refilling ink like a pro.

1
Turn on the printer and open the lid. The ink cartridges should slide into view. Remove the old cartridges and lay them onto a flat surface, such as a table, that is covered with old newspaper to protect against spills.
-
2
Remove the ink bottles from the Canon ink refill kit along with the syringe. Read the instruction manual for any specifics on how much ink you should use in your printer. Check for any warnings the kit may include about refilling a Canon ink cartridge.

3
Unscrew the lid to one of the ink bottles and locate the matching colored ink cartridge. Find the hole on the top of the ink cartridge and poke the tip of the syringe through it to make sure it is open.
-
4
Insert the syringe into the colored ink bottle and slowly fill it with ink. Fill it all the way unless the kit instructs otherwise. If it gives a specific amount of ink to use, fill the syringe only to the line marking that specific amount.
-
5
Insert the syringe into the hole in the matching colored ink cartridge. Push it down until you feel it touch the bottom of the cartridge. Pull up slightly to give the ink room to flow and press down on the top of the syringe. Keep pressing until you see ink near the top of the cartridge or at the hole you inserted the syringe into. Stop filling the cartridge even if there is ink left in the syringe.
-
6
Remove the syringe and squirt the excess ink back into the ink bottle. Wipe the top of the ink cartridge off with a paper towel and place it back in the printer. Rinse the syringe with warm water and allow it to dry. Repeat this process to fill the other colored cartridges and finally the black ink cartridge. Run a test print after installing the cartridges to make sure they are functioning properly.

Tips & Warnings
If your ink cartridges are old or dried out, refilling them may not work. It is best to refill the ink as soon as it gets low and replace the cartridges with new ones after one or two refills.
