Keep your lucky plant in a properly lit location. Lucky bamboo plants grow in dense, shadowy areas of the jungle, so unlike many other plants, direct sunlight is too much for it. Keep you lucky plant in a locations where it will receive moderate, indirect sunlight. Give it rather less light than too much.

Keep your lucky plant well watered. As the water level in your lucky plant's container reaches about half, add more water. Once a week make sure you empty all of the water out and replace it with fresh water.

    • 3

Use the correct kind of water. While lucky plants need lots of water to survive, they typically do not respond well to the chlorine and other chemicals in tap water. If you can, use filtered water for your plant. As another alternative, place a container outside when it rains to collect the rain water to use for the lucky bamboo.

Occasionally give your plant some essential nutrients. Lucky plants can survive for quite a long time on plain water, but after awhile you may need to replenish some of your plant's nutrients. Once every couple of months you should add some aquarium plant food when you change the water. Do not overfeed your plant--once every two months is plenty.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you plants' leaves are turning brown the likely causes are fluoride in the water or over-fertilization. Switch to filtered water and lay off the plant food for several months to see if that helps.
