How to Find a Windows XP Pro SMTP Server Email Address

The Microsoft Outlook Express email client is included free with Windows XP Pro, and is installed by default when the operating system is installed. In troubleshooting an email problem on a computer running Windows XP Pro, it may be necessary to extract the email server settings used in Outlook Express. Use the email account settings in Outlook Express to determine the SMTP (outgoing mail) server address and port number used by an email account.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Tools" in Outlook Express, then click "Accounts."

    • 2

      Click the "Mail" tab.

    • 3

Click the email account that you need to find the SMTP server for, then click "Properties."

    • 4

Click the "Servers" tab. The address of the SMTP server is shown in this screen. Also note whether the box labeled "My Server Requires Authentication" is checked. In most cases, authentication is required by outgoing mail servers in order for a sent email to be allowed through.

    • 5

Click the "Settings" button. This screen shows whether the email account uses the same user name and password when sending emails, or different login credentials. Click "OK" to close this window.

    • 6

Click the "Advanced" tab. This screen shows the port number used for the email account when an outgoing connection is made, and whether the connection is encrypted (indicated by the "This Server Requires a Secure Connection" check box.

    • 7

Close the open windows after noting all appropriate settings.

Step 3 says "Click the email account that you need to find the SMTP server for, then click "Properties." But there are no accounts listed there!
