How to Get Unemployment while Working Part Time

Working a part time job can lengthen the amount of time that you receive unemployment checks. Unemployment benefits will be reduced slightly if you pick up a part time job, but the money will go further in supporting you financially-making it more likely that unemployment insurance will last until you are fully employed again. Here's how to get unemployment benefits while working a part time job.

Instructions

1. File an unemployment claim as you normally would; call or go online to open your unemployment file.

2. Report weekly (just as you would for a regular claim) to the unemployment hotline or website, even when you're working your part time job.

3. Apply to three jobs a week; this unemployment insurance requirement does not change. Be sure to record the unemployment job search just as you would if you were not working part time.

4. Use the unemployment benefit website to see how much your unemployment claim will be reduced each week with part time work. Make sure that the numbers still leave you with enough money each month to pay your bills.

5. Report the hours worked each week when you file your weekly unemployment claim; it will directly ask how many hours you worked, otherwise the filing and payments will be the same as regular unemployment benefits.
