How to Write a Narrative Essay

Writing a good narrative is easier than you thought! This article will explain how to write a good, effective, and powerful narrative essay.

1. 

   First, you have to figure out what the purpose of the narrative is. The purpose of the essay will serve as your topic. Your purpose will either explain something that happened, prove a point, or entertain the audience. If you're uncertain of your purpose, how can you expect your readers to know?

2. 

   Upon picking the purpose, you must now have a clear understanding of the importance of your essay. Basically, have a main point that will interest your readers so they will continue to read on. There is nothing like having a pointless essay that consists of senseless rambling.

3. 

   The narrative must contain good primary support. The primary support will be all the major events that help support your main point. Be sure to include every major event so you can get your main point across effectively. You're telling the story, so ensure the readers know the full story by the end of the essay. It is best to include a minimum of three points, but if there are more, write more.

4. 

   Bring your story to life by adding secondary support. The secondary support are details to help emphasize the importance of each major event. This will most likely be what your readers are looking forward to, so be very thorough. Every small detail is just as important as the larger ones, but don't drown your essay with them. It may bore your reader, so be very careful to only add essential details. If your reader doesn't gain anything beneficiary from it, it's probably best to leave it out.

   A narrative must always be put in chronological order, which simply means the order in which it happened. This will help your essay flow much easier and will not confuse your readers. Fluency is always important, so keep it in order if you expect your audience to gain any knowledge from the essay.

6. 

   Once you have your purpose, primary support, and secondary support gathered, it's time to write a thesis sentence. This is the most dreaded part of an essay, but it's very simple actually. Your thesis must incorporate a clear understanding of what you will be talking about. So use this simple equation: Topic + Main point = Thesis. This is why it is best to gather all your information before you start the actual paper, so writing the paper will be simple. It is best to include your thesis in your introductory paragraph and remind your readers of it in your conclusion paragraph.

7. 

   Now it's time to write your paper. The best way to do this is by remembering a simple format. Introduction: State the importance of the experience → First Major Event: Include Secondary Details → Second Major Event: Include Secondary Details → Third Major Event: Include Secondary Details → Conclusion: State the importance again and make a valid conclusion on it.

8. 

   Be sure to include Time transitions such as first, second, third, at last, before... etc. to increase the fluency of your essay. Like stated above, fluency is key in any essay!

9. 

   Take a break and come back a few hours later and revise/edit your paragraph. Check for fluency, spelling, and grammatical mistakes.
